Shipwreck Lodge

Shipwreck Lodge stands where the Hoarusib River reaches the Atlantic Ocean, inside Skeleton Coast National Park, within a concession of roughly one hundred and forty-six thousand hectares stretching north through the park's central zone. It is the only lodge operating inside the park. The Benguela current delivers a steady cold breeze off the water, and the ocean is visible from the cabins.

The ten ensuite cabins are built to resemble stranded vessels — low, angular structures that sit among the dunes rather than above them. Each is solar-powered and fitted with a wood-burning stove, shower, writing desk, and a tea and coffee station stocked by staff. There are no grid utilities here, and the nearest settlement is Möwe Bay, forty-five kilometres to the south.

Guests arrive at Möwe Bay — by fly-in or self-drive — and transfer to the lodge by closed game vehicle, passing rusting ship hulls, the remains of a Ventura Bomber, and the abandoned Westies Diamond Mine along the route. From the lodge, activities include guided walks along the Skeleton Coast shoreline, excursions up the Hoarusib River to the Clay Castles geological formation, sundowner drives to the Roaring Dunes, quad biking on a designated route, dune boarding, and beach lunches on the Atlantic shore when weather permits. Desert-adapted elephants, lions, and brown hyenas move through the concession.

The lodge has a bar, communal dining, and a restaurant, and is malaria-free.
