Riding safaris and game drives across a twenty-four-thousand-acre Laikipia cattle ranch and conservancy
Set on a twenty-four-thousand-acre ranch and conservancy in Laikipia, Sosian Lodge occupies a 1940s house built by Italian artisans and restored after 1999. Seven cottages lie in gardens overlooking Mount Kenya. Each holds either a double or twin bed, an en-suite bathroom, mosquito nets, and a veranda. The Italian Cottage has a walk-through closet, twin basins, and a separate bath and shower. The Family Cottage links a double and a twin or triple room with interconnecting doors and two bathrooms, one with a bath. A solar-heated pool and hard-surface tennis court lie near the main house, which holds a sitting room, dining room, bar, billiards room, and a wraparound veranda.
Thirty horses support riding safaris across open plains and river valleys; rides last one to three hours or extend to overnight fly camps. Game drives depart in open four-wheel-drive Land Cruisers with raised seats. Walking safaris with armed guides track lion, wild dog, elephant, buffalo, Grevy's zebra, and reticulated giraffe. Fifteen kilometres of the Ewaso Narok River cross the property, with waterfalls dropping nine metres into pools used for swimming and fishing. You can cycle, take camel treks, or visit Samburu, Pokot, and Turkana villages by arrangement. Night drives reveal leopard, hyena, and aardvark. Over seventy mammal species and three hundred and fifty bird species are recorded here.
The lodge grows salads and vegetables in an on-site garden and sources beef, chicken, and lamb from neighbouring farms. Staff prepare bush breakfasts and candlelit dinners on the land. Massages use organic oils; a shop stocks work by Kenyan artisans. Wireless internet is available in the reception area.
