Stonefly Lodge Nelson

The Motueka Valley holds Stonefly Lodge on 140 acres of private land between three national parks, with the Motueka River running past the front lawn. The river supplies the stonework: every stone in the double-sided fireplace, the walls, and the pillars was hand-picked from its banks, and the timber was milled on site. Four guest suites occupy the upper floor, each with a private balcony framing the river and the Mt Arthur Range beyond. Solar panels cover the roof. A spring in the hills behind provides drinking water. It is off-grid by design, not by accident.

Days run toward the water. Guests wade the Motueka for wild brown trout, often four to five pounds, or fly by helicopter into Kahurangi National Park for backcountry rivers reached no other way. A short walk from the lodge leads to a swimming hole on the property's own stretch of river. Abel Tasman National Park lies within reach by private boat, its beaches accessible only from the water, with seals and dolphins along the way. Evenings gather around one long table for a four-course dinner drawn from the kitchen garden and local growers, followed by cocktails on the terrace as the light shifts over the valley. You can hear the river from every room.
