The Cavern Drakensberg Resort & Spa is a family-owned mountain resort at the head of a valley in the Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve. The Carte family established the property in 1941 as a homestead and has run it for three generations. Fifty-five rooms and suites occupy thatched lodgings arranged across gardens and along the edge of an indigenous fern forest. Two daily guided walks depart from the resort.
Standard rooms hold king or twin beds, an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower, underfloor heating, and a patio facing the garden or mountain. Superior rooms overlook the forest and add a television, bar fridge, ceiling fan, and private deck. Superior suites include a fireplace. Family configurations link two bedrooms or place a single bed beside a double in one room. Breakfast is served from 07h30; a set menu runs in the seated dining room. The Cave Bar opens in the evening. A snack menu operates until 16h00. Picnic lunches can be requested.
The Forest Retreat Spa sits in the canopy above Putterill's Stream and offers massages, facials, manicures, and pedicures. Three mountain dams are stocked with rainbow trout; fly fishing only. Horse trails leave from the stables. Mountain-bike routes cross the reserve. A tennis court, lawn bowls, and an unheated pool lie on the grounds. Bushman rock art is accessible on foot from the resort. You can hear the stream from the spa terrace.
