The Hildana Lodge
The Taita Hills rise behind the lodge, and ahead of it a 5,000-acre sanctuary runs into the Tsavo elephant corridor linking Lake Jipe to the Galana River. The Hildana sits beside a working sisal estate that has farmed this ground since 1972, and the family still runs both. It is a small property. Eight rooms only, sleeping 20 guests at most: five double rooms, two family units, and one honeymoon suite set apart on a raised platform with its own garden. Each is a stand-alone cottage reached along a paved path, open-fronted against the Taita heat, with a private veranda or patio. Interiors lean Mediterranean, softened with a coastal Swahili touch. Waterholes inside the sanctuary draw elephant herds through in season, along with resident cheetah and lion and the occasional wild dog, and evenings on the deck often mean watching them drink at dusk. Game drives run daily in open shared vehicles, and a guided tour takes guests through the sisal factory and farm, one of the largest sisal producers in the world. Forest walks into the Taita Hills reserves suit birders; Tsavo National Park itself is a forty-five-minute drive. A small spa above a private waterhole offers massages and treatments using a Kenyan skincare range. Meals are taken communally with the host team, often outdoors, breeze and birdsong included.
