Set in the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve near the Botswana border, Tuningi Safari Lodge is four luxury suites and two family suites built around a rim-flow pool that overlooks an active waterhole. The thatched main lodge holds a lounge, dining room, and bar linked by a wooden deck that leads down to a boma and viewing terrace above the water. An underground hide sits steps from the waterhole, placing guests at eye level with elephant, buffalo, and zebra as they drink.
Each luxury suite opens onto a private wrap-around deck with a plunge pool and includes a lounge area, his-and-hers basins, a bathtub, and both indoor and outdoor showers. Family suites hold two en-suite double bedrooms, a living room, kitchenette, and dining area, each with its own plunge pool on an expansive timber deck. Mosquito nets, robes, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, and complimentary wireless internet are standard. Children aged six and above are welcome.
Guided game drives depart twice daily in open Land Cruisers. Rangers lead morning and afternoon drives across the reserve, which lies in a transition zone between Kalahari thornveld and Lowveld bushveld. The reserve is home to 86 mammal species, 420 bird species, and 105 tree species. Sightings include lion, leopard, black and white rhino, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, and the endangered African wild dog. Wellness treatments can be arranged in suites. The lodge is a 50-minute charter flight from Johannesburg or a four-and-a-half-hour drive. Heidi and Gavin Tonkinson have run the property since 2005.
