Waterberry Zambezi Lodge

Set beneath high thatch and open to the sound of the river, the cottages at Waterberry catch the Zambezi light through gaps in the roof rather than shutting it out. Each of the seven rooms is different, built and furnished by local craftsmen, with a private terrace facing the water or the lawns. The lodge sits on the riverbank itself, one of few small properties actually on the Zambezi near Victoria Falls, some 35 minutes' drive from Livingstone International Airport. It is a quiet base. Elephant and buffalo come down to drink at dusk, and hippos grunt and jostle just off the bank, audible from bed most nights. The River Farmhouse stands apart as a private, staffed house with three ensuite bedrooms and a two-bedroom suite, an infinity pool, and its own chefs and garden team for exclusive use by one group. The Woodlands, three 40 m² tents pitched in the conservation area's shade, suit birders and anyone happier hearing bushbuck than traffic. A sunset cruise on the river is standard practice here, taken slow, with the mist and birdlife of dawn as an alternative for early risers. Waterberry also runs Tukongote, a community school and skills centre nearby, and guests can join a village walk to see it firsthand. The pool, ringed by rockery, stays busy between activities.
