Wilderness Bisate

Wilderness Bisate sits inside the hollow of an eroded volcanic cone in north-west Rwanda, with direct views of the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcano peaks through the cloudforest of the Virunga Massif. The lodge holds six forest villas, each ninety-one square metres, built with a central fireplace, en-suite bathroom, veranda, and enough insulation from Rwanda's highland nights that you will want it. The villas reflect the culture of rural Rwanda and are set on land that is still being actively restored.

The main reason guests come is to trek mountain gorillas. Daily gorilla treks depart from the Volcanoes National Park gate, a short drive away. The park holds several habituated gorilla groups and is home to roughly half the world's total population of endangered mountain gorillas — around one thousand individuals survive globally. Golden monkeys, endemic to the Virunga area and living in bamboo forest in groups of thirty to eighty, are also trackable within the park.

Other activities run from the property itself. An agronomist takes you through the tree nursery and lets you plant a sapling in Bisate's ongoing reforestation programme, which has expanded the cloudforest on the crater slopes. Guided walks on the property cover more than two hundred bird species, thirteen of them endemic to the Virunga area. Further afield, a full-day hike reaches the summit of Mount Bisoke at three thousand seven hundred and eleven metres, and a separate challenging hike climbs to the ruins of the Karisoke Research Centre and the grave of Dian Fossey, set at around three thousand metres in the saddle between Bisoke and Karisimbi.
