Wilderness Usawa - Serengeti National Park

Wilderness Usawa is a mobile safari operation inside Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Rather than sitting in one place, it moves — working across nine migration sites spread through the park's fifteen thousand square kilometres, repositioning its camps to stay close to the wildebeest herds as they follow the rains on their nearly one-thousand-kilometre annual circuit.

At any point in the year, two camps are set up and running. The tents are fully appointed: comfortable beds, proper furniture, running facilities — the kind of setup that moves without leaving any permanent mark on the plains. Every site sits within a designated walking zone, so walking safaris start directly from camp rather than requiring a drive to reach them.

Game drives go out in the early morning, when rangers stop on the granite kopjes for coffee and breakfast with the plains below, and again in the afternoon for the low light that suits photography. Guests who want to stay out all day can take a packed lunch and return only at sunset. The migration brings lion, hyena, cheetah and crocodile into regular view — predator pressure on the herds is constant, and the Mara and Grumeti rivers, where crocodiles wait at crossing points, are among the nine sites the camp works around.

Calving peaks in February, when between three hundred thousand and four hundred thousand wildebeest are born on the southern plains and immediately join the moving herds.
