Ckoi Atacama Lodge

San Pedro de Atacama sits in the driest desert on earth, and Ckoi Atacama Lodge sits on the town's main street, built into what were once old muleteers' corrals. The rooms are built of adobe, stone and timber, materials drawn straight from the surrounding land, and each opens onto a garden view. A llama and alpaca corral occupies one side of the grounds. There is a pool, an outdoor wood fireplace, and a spa offering massage in the open air, shaded by native chañar and algarrobo trees. Rooms range from a double up to a five-person suite built partly below ground, its layout drawn from the old Atacameño settlement of Tulor. All rooms carry Atacameño weavings and blankets, and each has a private bathroom with a tub or shower and heating for the cold desert nights. Breakfast is included, and eggs come from the lodge's own hens; a greenhouse and small plots of corn and alfalfa supply other food. Solar panels provide the electricity. At night the desert sky over San Pedro turns properly dark, far from city light, and the lodge's location under it is part of the draw. It is a five-minute walk to Caracoles, the town's central street. The property also arranges tours through local operators and keeps its own vehicle for airport transfers.
