Mbali Mbali Gombe

Shaded by mango groves on the Lake Tanganyika shore, Mbali Mbali Gombe Lodge is six tents on wooden platforms within Gombe Stream National Park. The park is a narrow band of montane forest bordering the lake, the second deepest in the world. Jane Goodall conducted her chimpanzee research here. Each tent holds twin beds, a shower, mosquito nets, a veranda, and a private deck. One tent can be configured as a double. The lodge accommodates twelve guests at a time.

Daily chimpanzee trekking departs with a guide into the forest. Tanzania National Parks regulations set the minimum age at fifteen years. Groups are limited to six people for one hour of viewing. Kayaks are available for paddling along the shore. Boat safaris explore the lake. Forest walks track birds and identify flora. A cultural tour visits the neighbouring fishing village of Mwamgongo, where demonstrations include palm-oil extraction, boat-making, and the traditional Ha dance.

The lodge has a restaurant, a bar, and a small library. Three meals are served daily. Three complimentary beverages are included per meal—water, soft drinks, and beers. Laundry is complimentary. Boat transfers run between Kigoma Hilltop Hotel and the lodge for stays of two nights or more. You can hear the lake from the tent decks. Internet access is available. Staff speak English and Swahili.
