Sanctuary Pakbeng Lodge

Boats idle at a small beach below the lodge, arriving and departing through the day along the Mekong. Sanctuary Pakbeng Lodge stands on the river's edge, roughly midway between Luang Prabang and the Huay Xai border crossing, reachable by boat or by road through hill country and Khamu villages. Thirty rooms spread across two low buildings, each with a private balcony, a coffee table, and deckchairs facing the water. Bamboo and Hmong textiles line the walls. Floors are rosewood parquet throughout. The eight deluxe rooms go further: walls slide open on a track system, turning each room into an open deck above the river, with the bed set centre and the bathroom tucked out of sight. Two suites add a lounge area to the same layout. Opposite the lodge sits an elephant park working to rehabilitate animals once used in logging or tourism. Guided treks head into the hills to Khamu settlements rarely reached by tour groups. On site, a clinic run by a French doctors' association gives free care to nearby villages. The lodge grows its own vegetables and holds Travelife Gold certification, the first in Laos to do so. Two restaurants face the river. Evenings end with the sun behind the hills and the last boats coming in.
