Valkea Lodge

Set on the shore of a lake in Finnish Lapland, Valkea Lodge is built from red pine, without artificial materials, in a region shared culturally between Finland and Sweden. The name is old Finnish for both white and fire, a nod to the snow-white pine forest around the cabins. There are 15 cabins, split into two apartments each, 30 units in total. Each has one bedroom, a fireplace in the living room, a kitchenette and a bathroom. Some units add a sauna, terrace and a massaging bed; guests choose accordingly. Trails run straight from the cabin doors. In winter, that means snowmobile safaris, snowshoe treks, cross-country skiing and ice fishing, plus visits to the lodge's own Siberian husky farm. You can hear little beyond the forest at night. Summer brings canoeing on the lake, salmon fishing on a nearby free-flowing river, berry and mushroom picking, and hikes to nearby lakes such as Ohriselänniemi and Salmilompolo. The lodge is part of Original Lapland, a network of small operators across the border region, and staff run guided trips with an emphasis on low impact and safety. Families of four can be accommodated, with children on a sofa bed in the living room. Wi-Fi and TV are standard throughout.
