andBeyond Phinda Vlei Lodge

Phinda Vlei Lodge sits on the boundary between sand forest and open wetland inside andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. The lodge holds six thatched, glass-fronted suites — small enough that game moves through the fringes without disturbance from a crowd. Each suite is air-conditioned and includes a bedroom with a lounge area, a personal bar, and an en-suite bathroom that connects to an open-air shower on one side and a dedicated dressing room on the other. On the deck outside, a sala and a private pool face directly onto the wetland, where animals come and go throughout the day.

The design draws on the plantation homesteads that once stood across this part of KwaZulu-Natal — bold textiles, natural materials, wide decks. The main guest area has a library and a firepit for drinks before dinner. Meals are served on an all-weather al fresco deck with wetland views.

Game drives go out mornings and evenings and continue after dark. Guides will track a specific species if that is what you want. Walking safaris — both short interpretive walks around the lodge and longer armed big-game walks — run subject to guide availability. Rhino tracking on foot is offered as an additional option, following black rhino signs with a ranger and tracker team.

Phinda also reaches beyond the reserve: the Maputaland coastline and Sodwana Bay are within range for beach outings, ocean safaris, scuba diving, and turtle nesting visits during the southern hemisphere summer. A Mzinene River boating outing offers a different angle on the reserve from the water. Staff speak English and Zulu.
