Boca Tapada Lodge

A king vulture holds still at a feeding point 1.5 km from the lodge, close enough to photograph without a long lens. That single sighting sums up the pitch here: Boca Tapada Lodge sits in the forests and wetlands of northern Costa Rica, where tapirs, jaguars, green macaws, and crocodiles share the same river system as the guests. Kayak and boat tours run along the Tres Amigos and San Carlos rivers, where monkeys, iguanas, and turtles show up along the banks. Guides lead birding walks through the trails of the Hacienda Boca Tapada reserve each morning, tracking a share of the country's nine hundred-plus recorded bird species. Horseback rides cross the same reserve, pausing at a natural pool partway through the loop.

Five room types, from Corteza to Teca, come with air conditioning, a mini fridge, coffee maker, and a private balcony facing the river or the hill above it. Several bathrooms open straight to the outdoors, under mosquito netting and open sky. It is a small, quiet base, set well away from the country's busier coastal circuits. Guests can also join a day trip to a beekeeping project and an organic farm near Boca San Carlos, built around a 350-year-old ceiba tree. Airport transfers and laundry are arranged on request.
