Grootbos covers three thousand five hundred hectares of fynbos and Afro-montane forest above Walker Bay, about two hours from Cape Town on the Gansbaai coast. You stay in freestanding suites at either Forest Lodge or Garden Lodge, each suite with a private deck, fireplace, and outdoor shower. The rate is full-board: buffet breakfast, three-course lunch, and à la carte dinner are included, along with a broad range of guided activities on the reserve.

Included activities cover a lot of ground — guided fynbos hikes, a milkwood forest walk, a 4x4 botanical flower safari, horseback riding through the reserve (guides cater to all levels), a coastal drive with land-based whale watching in season from June to December, beach picnics, and a visit to the Klipgat Cave, a Middle Stone Age site dating back some seventy thousand to eighty thousand years. Bird watching is available across the reserve. Additional activities at extra cost include shark cage diving from Kleinbaai Harbour, boat-based whale watching with the chance to see dolphins, African penguins, and Cape fur seals, scenic flights, fat biking, and the Lady Stanford River Cruise along the Klein River.

The kitchen draws heavily from the reserve's own organic farm — eggs from three hundred free-range chickens, hand-reared pork, and micro herbs grown on site. Fresh fish is delivered daily from Gansbaai Harbour. Restaurants serve resident guests only and are not open to the public. Forest Lodge accepts children twelve and older; Garden Lodge accepts children of all ages.
