Motse, Tswalu

Red dust, thatch and pale Kalahari stone define the nine legae at Motse, each set among indigenous gardens facing an active waterhole below the Korannaberg mountains. Legae is Setswana for house, and the name fits: rooms open onto sun decks with day beds, wood-burning stoves and outdoor showers, built to hold both heat and cold in a landscape of sharp temperature swings. Three of the nine are family legae, with two bedrooms joined by a shared lounge. It is the reserve's original camp. From the main lodge veranda, guests watch antelope and birds drift to the waterhole while the mountains hold the horizon. Inside, a stone fireplace, mezzanine library and glass-walled wine cellar anchor the communal spaces, with two pools and a fire pit for evenings outdoors. A boma hosts barbecue dinners under open sky, and the reserve's habituated meerkat colonies allow guests to sit within two metres of them at sunrise. Horse riding, on well-schooled mounts for intermediate and advanced riders, follows game paths past sociable weaver colonies and grazing oryx. Motse also holds a spa, a daylit gym with Technogym equipment, and a photographic studio for guests refining images between drives. Access covers 118,000 hectares of private reserve, tracked on foot, on horseback or from a private 4x4 with dedicated guide and tracker.
